Fortum is a Finnish energy company that generates and sells electricity and heat to homes, businesses, and industries across Northern Europe. Its main products are electricity — much of it produced from hydropower and nuclear power plants — and district heating, which pipes warmth directly into buildings. Fortum is one of the largest producers of clean electricity in the Nordic region, with a long history rooted in Finland and Sweden.

The company earns money by selling electricity on wholesale markets and through retail contracts, as well as by providing heat through its district heating networks. Fortum operates primarily in Finland, Sweden, and the Baltic countries, with an annual revenue base that makes it a major regional utility. Its large fleet of hydropower and nuclear assets gives it a relatively low-cost, low-carbon advantage over rivals. The key risk is that electricity prices in Nordic wholesale markets are highly volatile, which can sharply swing Fortum's earnings from one year to the next.

Growth + cash flow

Fortum Oyj is a rare growth stock that's already generating positive cash flow while growing at 15%. The Winston Score doesn't fully credit this transition from "burner" to "earner."

The Winston Score above measures business quality today. Growth stocks often score lower because they invest in the future rather than maximising current profits. These metrics show what matters most for evaluating that future.
