Nutrien is the world's largest producer of potash, a key ingredient in fertilizer that helps crops grow bigger and faster. The company mines and sells potash, nitrogen, and phosphate — the three main nutrients used in agriculture — to farmers around the world. It also runs a large retail network of farm supply stores, mostly in North America, that sells seeds, crop protection products, and fertilizer directly to growers.

Nutrien makes money by selling fertilizer products wholesale to distributors and directly to farmers through its roughly 2,000 retail locations. It operates primarily in Canada, the United States, and Australia, with potash mines in Saskatchewan that give it a low-cost production advantage over many competitors. The biggest risk the company faces is that fertilizer prices are highly cyclical and tied to global commodity markets, meaning profits can swing sharply depending on supply, demand, and geopolitical events like trade disputes or conflicts that disrupt competing producers.
