Standard Bank Group is one of Africa's largest banks, headquartered in Johannesburg, South Africa. It offers everyday banking services like checking accounts, loans, mortgages, and credit cards to regular people, as well as more complex services like corporate lending, trade finance, and investment banking to businesses and governments. The bank operates across more than 20 African countries, making it one of the continent's most geographically widespread financial institutions.

Standard Bank makes money by charging interest on loans, collecting fees for transactions and account services, and earning commissions on insurance and investment products. Its massive branch and digital network across Africa gives it a strong competitive position in markets where many residents are still gaining access to formal banking for the first time. The biggest growth driver is the continued expansion of financial inclusion across Africa, but the bank also faces real risks from currency volatility, political instability, and uneven economic growth across the diverse countries where it operates.
