Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) is a federally owned corporation that generates and delivers electricity across a large part of the southeastern United States, covering Tennessee and parts of six neighboring states. It operates coal, natural gas, nuclear, and hydroelectric power plants, selling electricity mainly to local utilities and large industrial customers. TVA is one of the largest public power providers in the country and is unique because it is owned by the U.S. federal government rather than private shareholders.

TVA earns revenue by selling electricity, and because it is a government entity, it does not issue common stock — instead, it raises money through bonds and debt securities like these PARRS (Power Revenue Securities). It serves roughly 10 million people through about 153 local power companies and large direct customers. TVA's main competitive advantage is its government backing and regional monopoly, but its biggest risk is the heavy capital cost of maintaining aging infrastructure and transitioning its power mix toward cleaner energy sources.
